It’s a real downer when you get kicked out of spots. Abandoned, empty lot, empty warehouse, not a person, not a no-trespassing sign for miles, yet the cops have a real problem we’re having our way with the asphalt. Then again, they say they don’t care, they just want to go home, it’s all procedural –“tomorrow is a new day” with the ever-so faint hint that they know we will meet again in the near future in the same mundane situation.

So what’s a stunter to do? Hit the streets? I’m sure the cops would think twice if we said “OK” when they told us to leave and screamed out onto the public roads on one wheel. Honestly what else can we do; competitions, careers, gigs, rely on us putting work in at the spot. We just want to practice, a small, flat piece of concrete to practice our sport, our therapy and really what keeps most stunters out of real trouble. It’s a puzzling paradox, land, ownership, power, right, wrong –who’s to say? All I know is I would love the day that I can wake up and drive to the legal “stunt spot.”

This is a dream I consider often, will stunting have a tipping point where legal locations become available? Skateboarding pushed into the mainstream with skate-parks that cities and communities have footed the bill for. Motorcross has taken a private model with companies or individuals springing to build them and manage the tracks. Motorcycle racing blends private with organizations like the AMA to maintain a pleasant area to ride the way they want to.

I want to do wheelies and there is nothing wrong with that. Yet it becomes wrong in the sight of a certain individual, in the earshot of him or her or in the hours Bob Smith is on watch in Smalltown USA. This rant has no conclusion, but if you have one, I’d love to hear it.
