Today we went into Aix to visit the market and pick up some fresh eats for this weekend. On our way back to the bus stop, we stopped by a small crepe shop. These small, hole-in-the-wall places are very common for lunches or a quick snack. They may offer Persian food, sandwiches, pizza or crepes – I liken them to hotdog carts in America.

Since my little sister is considering opening a crepe shop in Washington State, I unselfishly took it upon myself to “test” crepes here in France for her. Since the crepe originated in France, it’s a fitting place to conduct research.

My personal favorite filling in crepes is lemon and sugar, but I actually tried three crepe stands in city-center that did NOT offer that, so I settled for a fig spread. The fig spread was good and I like the crunchy fig seeds, but I thought the whole thing was too sweet and much too large. I could not finish mine and handed the final few bites off to my boyfriend. This experience confirmed my love for a lemon filling; having the sour inside really offsets the sweetness and makes for a tangy, delightful snack.

The street crepes run about 2-3 euro and are a very filling snack. Since I am my sister’s official French connection, I will continue my quest for crepe inspiration and will share my experiences with you from time to time I am sure.

I loved these pictures! And how rough the man's hands looked while making such a delicate food. I've only had nutella crepes...must try this lemon one!
